COURSE I (4 HOURS):

African American English:  Implications for Assessment and Instruction

COURSE I OBJECTIVES >

At the end of the training, the participants will be able to:

  1. Identify key features and patterns of African American English across the linguistic domains (i.e., pragmatics, semantics, syntax, morphology, and phonology).

  2. Identify ways in which African American English potentially hinders student understanding and academic performance.

  3. Develop strategies to support the academic development of students who present with dialectal differences.

  4. Differentiate between patterns of African American English and Mainstream American English in order to facilitate students’ acquisition of Mainstream American English and Academic English.

COURSE II (3 HOURS):

Dialect and Its Impact on Development of Early Literacy Skills

COURSE II OBJECTIVES >

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the ways in which varied sociocultural norms/practices impact students’ academic performance.

  2. Identify prominent features and patterns of African American English.

  3. Identify potential barriers to phonological development presented by the African American English dialect.

  4. Make more appropriate referrals for special education services.

COURSE III (4 HOURS):

African American English:  Assessment and Intervention for Speech-Language Pathologists

COURSE III OBJECTIVES >

At the end of the training, the participants will be able to:

  1. Identify key features and patterns of African American English across the linguistic domains (i.e., pragmatics, semantics, syntax, morphology, and phonology).

  2. Develop strategies to support the academic development of students who present with dialectal differences.

  3. Differentiate between patterns of African American English and Mainstream American English.

  4. Identify and employ informal assessment procedures.
